Franklin Sheldon Ernest Morrill Sheldon E. Morrill, 87, a lifelong resident of Franklin died Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the Franklin Regional Hospital, with family at his side, following a period of failing health. Sheldon was born in Franklin, April 30, 1927, son of Sheldon B. and Jessie (Westcott) Morrill. He attended schools in Franklin and graduated in April 1945 from Franklin High School with 2 of his classmates, as they were heading into the Navy. Prior to its closure, Sheldon was employed for 20 years with the J. P. Stevens Woolen Mill in Franklin and later worked as a general manager and vice president of Concord Steam in Concord until his retirement. Sheldon was a 50 year member and trustee of the Congregational Christian Church, UCC in Franklin. He was a member and past commander of the VFW, Post # 1698 and a member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks BPOE, #1280. He was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers, an active member of the Franklin Outing Club for over 40 years, and a Past President. Sheldon was a Cub Scout Leader, coached Little League and was a two term member of the Franklin City Council from 1964-1969. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Franklin Fire Department from 1962-1981. Over the years Sheldon was an avid gardener, enjoyed hunting and fishing and volunteered for many years at the Veterans Memorial Ski Area. He was named Citizen of the Year in Franklin in 1999. He served his country with honor with the U. S. Navy from 1945 to 1949 as an engineer. Discharged as a Engineman Second Class, he served on the USS Kishwaukee and USS Lindewald and was the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal and American Area Campaign Medal. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three sisters, Shirley, Barbara and Almena. His family includes, his wife of 63 years, Olive B. (Leib) Morrill of Franklin; sons, Glenn E. Morrill and his wife Carolyn of Franklin and Robin L. Morrill of Hopkinton; daughters, Beth-Holly LaDuke of Webster, Allison K. Cross and her husband Donald of Franklin; six grandchildren, Shawn, Colby, Timothy, Katie, Abigail and Stephanie, four great-grandchildren; brother, Hollis A. Morrill Sr. of Franklin, sister, Marjorie Colby of Concord; nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 30th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road (584 West Main Street) in Tilton. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Congregational Christian Church, UCC, South Main St., in Franklin. A gathering will follow in Thompson Hall. Sheldon will be interred on Monday at 2:30 PM with honors at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 D.W.Highway in Boscawen.
