Laconia James Joseph McGovern James J. McGovern, 90 a resident of Laconia for the past 11 years died Friday, October 24, 2014 following a period of failing health. James was born in Jersey City, NJ, December 19, 1923, son of James and Helen (McNamara) McGovern. He lived in the Jersey City, Hasbrouck Heights areas for many years and prior to moving to Laconia he and his wife lived on Cape Cod. They spent vacation time in Italy visiting his wife's family. For over thirty five years he was employed as a purchasing agent with the Standard Brand Company and later Nabisco before his retirement. He served with the U. S. Army Air Force, 558th Night Fighter Squad, during WW II. He was predeceased by a brother. He leaves his wife of 24 years, Josephine (Tummina) McGovern of Laconia, his son, Robert McGovern and his wife Linda of North Port, FL, daughters, Lynn Basile of Port Charlotte, FL and Gail Ilic of Los Angeles. Eight grandchildren, two sisters, nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, calling hours will not be held. A committal service with military honors will be held Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 D. W. Highway in Boscawen. Arrangements are under the care of the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton. Those wishing may make memorial contributions in James' name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
