Geraldine "Gerry" Macdow

Life Legacy Franklin, New Hampshire Geraldine "Gerry" (Surratt) MacDow, 88, passed away peacefully at the Mountain Ridge Health Care Center in Franklin, NH on Sunday, July 14. Gerry was a native of Davidson County, North Carolina and lived in the Jackson Hill community for many years prior to moving to New Hampshire in 2008. Gerry was born in 1924 in Southmont, NC to Beverly Franklin Surratt and Clara Shirley Surratt. She was a graduate of Southmont High School, Pfeiffer College, and National College (Kansas City, Missouri), where she received her degree in Christian Education. She was ordained as a Deaconess in the Methodist Church and served in that position in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Hawaii. She later worked as a social worker in Wilkes, Ashe, Burke, and Davidson counties. Gerry grew up attending Macedonia United Methodist Church, and she was an active member there for the 30 years prior to her moving to New Hampshire. She was a member of the choir, taught Sunday School, and served in many leadership positions in the church. Gerry was married to The Rev. George W. MacDow in 1959. Their family grew to include her four stepchildren, a son, and a foster daughter. Gerry is survived by Rodney and Margo MacDow of Portland Oregon, and their children Kevin and Becca; David and Jill MacDow of Thatchem, England and their sons, Jamie, Ben, and Tim; Peter (Kabir) and Bhajana MacDow of Al Ain, United Arab Emirates and his son Chaitanya; Cindy and David Osborne of Cary, North Carolina, and their children, Daniel and Kristen; Valerie Gooch of Durango, Colorado, and her children, Katie, Lindsie, and Nikolai; and Stephen and Linda MacDow of Northfield, New Hampshire, and their daughter Clara. She is also survived by one brother, James Wade Surratt of Salisbury, North Carolina (formerly of Southmont), two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Gerry was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Surratt, and four sisters: Alene Surratt, Lucille Surratt Wilson, Zona Surratt Floyd, and Letha Surratt Phillips. A funeral service will be held in Franklin, New Hampshire. A celebration of Gerry�s life and the interment of her ashes will be held at Macedonia United Methodist Church in Southmont, North Carolina at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Macedonia United Methodist Church, 10890 NC Highway 8, Southmont, NC 27292. The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Ridge Health Care Center for the loving care they gave Gerry and her family in the last years of her life.
