Gary Bruce Sokol

Northfield Gary Bruce Sokol Gary B. Sokol, 68, of Northfield passed away at his home Monday, August 18, 2014. Gary was born in Oceanside, NY, to the late Lawrence and Irene Sokol. He spent his youth and was schooled in Oceanside, later living in Valley Stream, NY, before moving permanently to Northfield 38 years ago. He graduated from St. Johns University with a Master's Degree in Chinese Studies and later received his elementary education diploma from Notre Dame College. Gary taught elementary education for the Concord School District for 23 years before retiring in 2009. A gifted man, Gary enjoyed painting and many other art applications including miniatures, pottery, stained glass, and stenciling; he was also an avid gardener, cook, and reader. He was a member and treasurer for HSEAD (The Historical Society of Early American Decoration). Gary was a United States Army Veteran having served time in the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, C. Christine (Walker) Sokol; son, Alexander B. Sokol and his wife Kate (Smith) Sokol of Northfield and their children Boyce, Grace and Xavier; daughter, Rosemarie I. Sokol-Chang and her husband Tom Chang of Kensington, MD and their son Enso and a baby due in November; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the convenience of his family with burial to follow at the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. Arrangements are under the care of the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home in Tilton. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions in Gary's name to The Friends Program in Concord ( www.friendsprogram.org ) or The Hall Memorial Library in Northfield ( www.hallmemoriallibrary.org ).
