Dorothy S. (Scarponi) Donegan

Franklin Dorothy S. Donegan Dorothy (Scarponi) Donegan, 95, died peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Peabody Home in Franklin, N.H. after a period of failing health. She was born in Portsmouth, N.H. on March 4, 1918 the daughter of Antonio and Clarina (Turci) Scarponi. She attended Portsmouth schools graduating from Portsmouth High school in 1936 and went on to Keene Teachers College in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher, graduating in 1940. Dorothy (Dottie) met her future husband Herman Donegan at Keene and they were married in 1943 and resided in Portsmouth. She taught fourth grade at Haven, New Franklin and Sherburne schools. With the birth of her two sons, Donald in 1956 and Daniel in 1957, she retired from teaching. In 1959 the family moved to Franklin, N.H. with Herm�s appointment as Superintendent of Schools. Dottie returned to teaching after the death of her husband in 1971 and taught fourth grade at the Bessie C. Rowell Elementary school until her retirement in 1988. Her students would remember her as a teacher who held them to the highest standards and rewarded them with praise, encouragement and a sparkling smile of approval. After retiring, Dottie continued to volunteer at Rowell School by reading to the students. She also enjoyed her volunteer work in Franklin Hospital�s gift shop. She was an accomplished seamstress, avid golfer, bridge player and hobbyist. She held fond memories and great affection for Portsmouth, York Beach and her many happy years living at The Golden Crest in Franklin. She was a parishioner of St. Paul Church in Franklin. She was predeceased by her husband Herm in 1971 and her son Donald in 1985: her three older brothers, E. Edward, George, and Edmund Scarponi and her dear friend and fellow educator, Peg Downing She is survived by her son Daniel, of Tucson, Arizona, nephews Robert Scarponi of Canterbury, Richard Scarponi of Barrington, Edmund Scarponi of East Bridgewater, Mass., Kevin Scarponi of Dover, Calvin Scarponi of Greenland, their families and her cousin Nita (Turci) Mitchell of Kittery, Me. She was much loved and her presence will be greatly missed at family gatherings and the annual Fourth of July Scarponi Picnic. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the William F. Smart, Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road in Tilton. A graveside committal service will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at the family lot in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.
