Franklin Constance Louise (Smart) Durand Constance S. Durand, 89, a resident of The Golden Crest Community in Franklin for the last three and one half years died there, Sunday, July 19, 2015 following period of failing health. Connie was born in Franklin, February 2, 1926, daughter of the late, William F. Smart Sr. and Cathaleen A. (Roach) Smart. She graduated from Franklin High School, class of 1944. She went on to the NH State Hospital School of Nursing in Concord and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1947. She married her husband Otto in 1949. Constance was employed at Plymouth Hospital in Plymouth for several years until working in private duty nursing. Until her retirement Connie worked as nursing supervisor at the Plymouth State College Infirmary. She and her husband lived in Plymouth until moving to Northfield in 1986, where she lived until moving to Franklin in 2001. She enjoyed watching Boston Red Sox games and was a Patriot and Notre Dame Football fan, enjoying as many games (undisturbed) as possible. While living in Plymouth she and a very close friend were golfing "widows" during the weekends and Connie decided to buy a book on how to golf and she and her friend became golfers themselves, her husband, buying her first set of clubs. She was a former member of the White Mountain Country Club in Ashland, and Den Brae Golf Club in Sanbornton. When able, Constance attended Mass at St. Paul Church in Franklin. She was predeceased by her son, Paul David Durand who died in 1974 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Otto David Durand in 2000. Predeceased by her parents, Connie was one of six children, William F. Smart, Jr., John E. Smart Sr, Thomas G. Smart Sr. and Sandra L. Day who also predeceased her. She leaves one brother, J. Douglas Smart of Tilton and helpful friends, Scott and Brian. Connie leaves numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thank you to the Matzke family and staff at Golden Crest who understood Connie's needs. The care during her stay, provided Connie with much comfort and love by the staff who never had to ask what she thought........it was always clear. Dr. Paul Friend and his staff were wonderful over the years to Connie and Otto. According to Connie's wishes, there are no calling hours planned. A private committal service was held at the family lot at Franklin Cemetery in Franklin.
