Franklin Bertram James Pickess Bertram "Bert" J. Pickess, 95, a lifelong resident of Franklin died Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the Franklin Regional Hospital following a short period of failing health. Bert was born in Franklin, November 8, 1921, son of Bertram and Susanne (Whittaker) Pickess. Bert schooled in Franklin and was a graduate of Franklin High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in March of 1941 and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. His campaign service included, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Decorations and Citations included, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, European, African , and Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbons along with the Distinguished Unit Badge with Bronze Star. Bert married in 1947. He retired from the Genest Brother's Bakery Company of Manchester and was employed in sales and delivery, retiring from there following 21 years of employment. Bert was an avid golfer and member of both the Mojalaki Country Club in Franklin and Den Brae Golf Club in Sanbornton. He was also a longtime member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, BPOE, # 1280, recently driving his truck down to play cards. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Madeline "Mandy" H. Pickess who died July 5, 2015; also by two nephews, Harry Cail and Gary Kimball. He leaves, two nephews, Gene Kimball of Tampa, FL and Brent Belanger of Gilford. Honoring Bert's wishes, there are no calling hours or public services planned. Private burial was held along side of his wife Mandy at Franklin Cemetery in Franklin. Military Honors were offered along with flag presentation. Assisting with arrangements is the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home of Tilton.
